Editorial Design

Magazine covers for regional lifestyle, destination, and wedding publications. I partnered with editorial and publishers to develop each issue’s cover. For Spring/Summer 2020, I chose a deer in a blooming field, breaking from typical imagery. The cover was later voted a top favorite during the magazine’s 25th anniversary.

My editorial design experience spans high-volume, multi-brand publishing environments where storytelling, visual consistency, and collaboration are critical. I worked cross-functionally with editorial, advertising, photography, design, and sales teams to produce engaging publications, books, media kits, advertising materials, and in-house collateral that balanced creative vision with business goals.

Role & Process

I led design across the full publication lifecycle, translating editorial direction into cohesive, reader-focused layouts. My responsibilities included:

  • Developing book maps and layout systems.

  • Designing custom typography, illustration, and visual elements.

  • Art directing photography and handling photo editing.

  • Applying and evolving brand guidelines across publications.

  • Proofing, preparing files for print, uploading to printers, and approving final files.

This end-to-end involvement ensured visual consistency, production accuracy, and high-quality execution across every issue.

Scale & Impact

  • Contributed to over 115 publications across multiple brands.

  • Led full redesigns or partial refreshes for six publications.

  • Supported both editorial-driven and client-specific advertising initiatives.

My work helped modernize publication aesthetics, strengthen brand recognition, and maintain efficiency within fast-paced production timelines.

The editorial lookbook highlights a curated selection of my design contributions, showcasing layout systems, typography, photography integration, and brand-led storytelling across a range of audiences and markets.

At The Lake Magazine

This quarterly lifestyle publication reaches more than 25,000 readers in print and exceeds 20,000 digital sessions per issue. After supporting advertising, digital graphics, and media kits beginning in 2018, I stepped into the Art Director role for At The Lake in Spring 2020 and led the full design of the magazine, including covers, feature layouts, department pages, advertising, and sponsored content. In total while collaborating with the editorial director, advertising coordinator, and art director, I shaped 14 issues ranging from 108–148 pages, using strong visual storytelling to highlight regional history, people, homes, events, and lakefront lifestyle.

Experience Michigan Magazine

Produced as a biannual destination publication with a circulation of approximately 15,000, Experience Michigan required a highly cohesive and flexible design approach. I oversaw the complete design of each 52-page issue, from cover concepts and feature layouts to department pages and advertising. Working closely with the editorial director, I developed issues that celebrated Michigan’s culture, attractions, and natural beauty while navigating tight production schedules and unique collaboration constraints.

Experience Wisconsin Magazine

Originally published biannually with a circulation of around 20,000, Experience Wisconsin later transitioned to a digital-only format following the 2020 pause due to the pandemic. I led the design of the full 52-page publication, including covers, feature layouts, departments, and advertising. In partnership with the editorial director, I helped define the magazine’s visual identity and extended it through supporting materials such as media kits and trade show assets.

BRAVA Magazine

Recognized as the leading women’s magazine in the Madison area, BRAVA reaches an estimated 45,000 readers per issue. Over my tenure, I contributed to 33 issues in evolving roles, including serving as Art Director for two full issues and leading the publication’s design from cover to cover. My work also supported the brand’s large-scale events, ensuring a consistent and recognizable visual presence across both print and experiential platforms.

Older covers for destination and visitor guides, as well as wedding magazines, that inspired later redesigns. I collaborated with the editorial team to simplify cover lines, refine typography, and emphasize imagery, creating a cleaner, more engaging visual direction.
